Birthdays Must Be Celebrated!

Lotta is on her way to Wisconsin!

I put the sleep mask on her before I sent her off with all her clothes and her teddy bear. The only thing she still needs is a bathing suit. I will try to get one made sometime before summer. She is scheduled to arrive on Thursday.

The Brioche Shawl Feathers shawl is coming close to the end. I have 7 rows of the darker color and 8 rows of the lighter one. As you can see, I'm playing yarn chicken. If I have to order more yarn, it will double the cost of the shawl.

This has been a very fun project, but it would be nice have it done. I might be able to rewrite the rest of the pattern, but I'm going to try to finish it as-written first.

Our ballots came in the mail. Our state has only vote-by-mail, so we don't have to do anything to get our ballots. If you look closely at the ballot, it says, "Review both sides of ballot." I did. The other side was blank, except for the same instruction. This is an easy one. It's for the School Board, Community College, and Parks and Recreation.

I'm so happy they make it so easy to vote, especially since we still have so many active cases of Covid-19 here in Oregon, and our county is one of the worst. We're fully vaccinated, but we still need to be careful because of the variants.

Occasionally, we get to watch a plane fly over our street. There's a small landing strip right where this one is headed.

Our street is named for the landing strip, and we know about these planes, but someone driving by once called the police and said they had seen a plane crash in those trees. There's a park bench at our end of the landing strip, but you would die of hunger and thirst if you waited for a plane there without knowing when one would land. It doesn't happen frequently.

Saturday was Dusty's birthday. Here's how he looked when we brought him home nearly four years ago, when he was two months old. (The blue toenails are a nice touch.) Dusty is a silver, and they start out black. He already has a silver face in this photo.

Here's how he looks now.  We had planned to take him to the dog park for his birthday, but it rained. Not a good time to go and run around in the mud. He and Rocky each got a new toy, however, and I played with Dusty on the stairs (indoors) with a ball. He dropped the ball once and it bounced through the banister, ending up in the powder room toilet downstairs. I heard the splash! We will go to the dog park today, weather permitting.

Friday we received a phone call from our daughter telling us that our granddaughter won a prize for a story she wrote. Another writer in the family!

Daphne beat out all the other 5th grade students in the school district to win a prize in The Matt Hessel-Mial Elementary Writing Competition. The event celebrates the life of a young man who lost his battle with leukemia at the age of eight back in 1986. You can read more here. Matt was a prolific writer, especially for one so young. In the bag of goodies given to Daphne with her award was Matt's book, The Great Planet Swap and Other Stories.

What's on my needles: The Brioche Shawl Feathers Shawl, continuing progress.

What's on my sewing machine: Sleep mask for Pippa. Then some other things to finish up.

What's in my hoop: Still the Whole Cloth Quilt. A little more progress this week.

What's in The Doll's Storybook: Pups and Patients. Friday (the day the story came out) was National Therapy Animal Day. We honored pet-therapy teams by relating how Billy and Charlotte had qualified with their dogs to be pet-therapy teams and to visit damaged or injured dolls at the doll hospital. Mandy volunteers to help them practice before they go to the doll hospital. Pippa wonders what they're doing, and they explain it. (I've had a lot of people ask about the quilt.)

What's on my iPad/iPhone: Still listening to Hope for the Best by Jodi Taylor. This is from "The Chronicles of St. Mary's," a series I have really enjoyed.

What's in my wine glass: Terrain Vineyards Red Blend 2016. Not bad!

What's my tip of the week: We buy cheese in large packages to save money, but we freeze some of it, because there are only two of us. The softer sliced cheese varieties tend to crumble after they have been frozen, so I use my rotary cutter to cut squares from parchment paper that's just a little larger than the slices. I put a piece of parchment paper between the slices, to make separation easier.

Where's my book: Mariah: Stories from the Doll's Storybook is available from Amazon worldwide. Also available from BookBabyBarnes & Noble and other booksellers. Royalties go to support pediatric cancer research and treatment. The three stories in the book first appeared in the blog and they are reproduced with few changes. The stories (and links to them) are Being LittleBesties, and Distraction.

Note: This blog post was produced on the iPad and the MacBook, using the iPhone for some photos and some photo processing. No other computer was used in any stage of composition or posting, and no Windows were opened, waited for, cleaned or broken. No animals or dolls were harmed during the production of this blog post.
