Quick Update

Christmas has been great so far, and it isn't over as of the time I write this. We had pressies coming out the ears.

The cousins mostly got along great and enjoyed each other's company.

The cooking got done, including the Lohipiirakka (Finish Salmon Pie) for Christmas Eve. We had no leftovers.

The pups have been having a good time, in spite of naps disturbed by children. Rocky and Dusty have had special pots to lick.

Dusty has been enjoying playing with Louis, his bestie, whom he hasn't seen for a couple of months.

The music at church went well. It was enjoyable to sing for an actual congregation.

I had some adventures with senior-proof packaging.

This was a particular challenge. ("Twist off cap to break seal" is very misleading.)

The kiddos got some great presents that kept them busy during their waking hours.

Sunday was my birthday. More next week. Family will be here for a few more days. Next week I'll talk about projects I'm working on (new ones).

If you have a few minutes and are willing, please go to Amazon and B&N and search for "Emil: Stories from The Doll's Storybook by Peggy Stuart" in Children's. Every click on the page for the book makes it more likely they will keep a good supply in their warehouse and stores. If you are outside the US, you may have a separate website for these retailers. If you have a copy of our first book, Mariah: Stories from The Doll's Storybook, it would help if you left an honest review on the websites, especially if you bought from them.

Where's my blog: If you want to follow my blog, go here and sign up to follow.

What's on my needles: Empower by Casapinka. More info next week.

What's in my wine glass: I'm drinking egg nog.

What's my tip of the week: Be sure to get enough rest.

Merry Christmas 2021!

We finally got our tree up, and I wrapped all the presents I was personally responsible for.

I've been wearing the thrift-store cardigan I added an afterthought pocket to way back when. I hadn't worn it for a while because I had worn a hole in one of the elbows. I had a nice woolen pullover the moths got into some time ago. I washed the moth-eaten sweater in hot water and ran it through the dryer to felt it, then cut out some elbow patches to sew on my thrift-store cardi. It's sort of like a kidney transplant for the cardigan, which will now "enjoy" an extended life. I sewed them on using a blanket stitch.

I spent some time on the phone with an Apple technician, getting my Bose Sound Touch app to update. It took two sessions, because I needed to delete a ton of duplicate photos and some apps I never use to download the update. The Apple technicians were, as always, very patient. (I wonder if they knit while waiting for people to call.) Anyway, we got it to work. It was really important, because I have an extensive music library in my external hard drive, and I couldn't access it except to play the music through my laptop's speakers. While nice, they are really not suitable for listening if you aren't sitting at the computer. I have 18 hours of holiday music in one playlist and 15 hours in another. I could almost play one playlist after the other and never have a song repeat. It's all on my external hard drive, though. Not much good if the computer won't connect to the Bose.

I did some cooking for the holidays. I made some Lanttulaatikko (Finnish rutabaga casserole), a family tradition.

We also needed some Pulla (Finnish Cardamom Braid), another family tradition.

I made some cranberry sauce with honey, minted ginger, pepper flakes and lemon juice.

I still have dressing and a Sri Lankan sweet potato recipe to make for Christmas dinner. We have a fully-cooked turkey breast that just needs roasting and some Quorn "Meatless" Roast that also needs roasting. We'll have salad and some kind of green vegetable (maybe Brussels sprouts). We have some kind of pie or cheesecake for dessert, along with DH's birthday cake, which has been in the freezer since September.

Having most of the cooking in hand, I began the H-word, beginning with my workroom, which will be a bedroom for our daughter and her family. While Beatrice, my Eufy robot vacuum, worked her magic with the floor, I straightened up and made up the day bed and the trundle.

The wicker trunk will slide over in front of the closet doors (out of the photo), maybe with the desk chair, or we can move one or both of them into our bedroom, which has a lot of floor space. The kiddos will sleep on the floor in sleeping bags.

Then I moved the packages addressed to our daughter to the workroom table.

They're flying in, so they preferred to send their presents directly from the stores (and Amazon, as you can see).

I still have the other guest room to prepare, but that won't take much, and the rest of the house to (ugh!) clean. (Beatrice is going to be busy!)

Also during the week, I ran around to deliver copies of my new book to various places, including the library and the local yarn shop. The new book has links to the free patterns for the Wonderland Turtle turtleneck and the Everyday Play dress for dolls in 18", 19" slim and 14" sizes. The owner of the yarn shop wants me to make samples of them and leave a couple of dolls there wearing the items. Dolly and Gabi will go to work. The owner of the shop had suggested offering the patterns, yarn and book or books to customers when I left some copies of the first book with her. I included the links in this book. The customers can make something for a child's favorite doll and include it with the book as a present. I bought my yarn for the Rose City Yarn Crawl Mystery KAL there, too. All I have to do to be ready now is wind the yarn.

Rocky continues to get drops in his eyes (one kind six times a day and then the other kind twice a day) and his regular medication twice a day. I have to be sure to be up before him in the morning, because he shouldn't go down the steps to the family room to get out of the house to potty, because he can't see and could hurt himself. He also need an occasional check on him when he's outdoors, because he sometimes can't find his way back to the house. He has no trouble finding the person with the sandwich, however.

The choir is preparing for Christmas Eve. It's going to be a busy week.

Reminder: If you have a few minutes and are willing, please go to Amazon and B&N and search for "Emil: Stories from The Doll's Storybook by Peggy Stuart" in Children's. Every click on the page for the book makes it more likely they will keep a good supply in their warehouse and stores. If you are outside the US, you may have a separate website for these retailers. Where's my blog: If you want to follow my blog, go here and sign up to follow.

What's on my needles: Getting ready to CO for the Rose City Yarn Crawl Mystery Knit Along.

What's on my loom: Still the trailer rugs. I really had hoped to have finished them by now.

What's on my sewing machine: Still its cover. No progress (for some reason) on the T-shirt quilt.

What's in my hoop: Still the whole-cloth quilt. A little bit more done.

What's in The Doll's Storybook: The Week Before Christmas finds The Writer frantic because there is so much to get done before family members arrive for Christmas. The dolls take pity on her and do all the preparations for her, while she sits with a cup of tea and her up with Christmas movies on TV. People have been telling me they really enjoyed this one, which is a poem reminiscent of "The Night Before Christmas."

What's on my iPad/iPhone: Finished listening to State of Terror by Hillary Rodham Clinton and Louise Perry on the Audible app. It was hard to put down, but it took me longer to listen to because I was trying to get all the stories scheduled for the month. Now listening to Mel Brooks' All About Me. I heard an interview with the 95-year-old comedian and screenplay writer on NPR during the week and tried to buy the book. Sold out! (It's still available on Kindle and Audible, however.) I wish my books would sell like that.

What's in my wine glass: Madroña Vineyards' Lake Tahoe 2016 El Dorado, a new favorite.

What's my tip of the week: Always dust before vacuuming. That way, the vacuum picks up the dust you just removed from shelves, etc. Start with the highest shelves or places to dust and work your way down.

Where are my books: The stories in each book first appeared in the blog and they are reproduced with few changes. Emil: Stories from The Doll's Storybook is now available for preorder from booksellers world wide. Frantic Preparations

Our neighbor across the street put up his Christmas display at Thanksgiving. It serves as a reminder every night as I go to sleep. Christmas is getting closer.

We've made some progress in our preparations.  We have a wreath on the door.

We still don't have the tree up, but the space for it is cleared, and we got our Christmas letter written, and DH went out to a copy shop and made copies. We went through our list and sent as many by email as possible.

Jackson's sweater is done. The dolls are now back in their boxes, ready to meet their real children Christmas morning.

Here's the back, showing the buttons.

I have the stories written, photos taken and scheduled through New Year's Eve, and two more written after that for early January, with just the photos left to take. I still have cooking, baking, wrapping, and (ugh!) cleaning to do before the kids get here. DH will decorate the tree for me!

This photo of our church choir was taken as part of the Advent Word activity. We were practicing before the service.

We had our first snow Sunday morning. This is about typical for Bend.

I discovered this great Christmas song/video. (Love the cat.) I hope it will get you in the holiday spirit.

If you want a laugh, go to The Doll's Storybook on Friday (December 17th) after 1:00 PM PT for my poem, "The Week Before Christmas."

Note: If you've left comments and I haven't responded, it's because that function doesn't seem to be working for some reason. I will try again.

Where's my blog: If you want to follow my blog, go here and sign up to follow.

What's on my needles: Sewing elbow patches on an old sweater. Sort of on my needle(s).

What's on my loom: Still the trailer rugs, but some progress.

What's on my sewing machine: The T-shirt quilt!

What's in my hoop: Still the whole cloth quilt.

What's in The Doll's Storybook: Epistles from Dolls. The dolls pick names if students to write letters to to go along with copies of our second book.

What's on my iPad/iPhone: Still State of Terror by Louise Penny and Hillary Rodham Clinton on the Audible app. It's hard to stop listening.

What's in my wine glass: Tucana Cabernet Sauvignon Pinotage from South Africa. We've had this one before, and we like it.

What's my tip of the week: Cookie dough can be frozen and brought out to bake just what you need. Just add a couple of minutes to the cooking time..

Where are my books: The stories in each book first appeared in the blog and they are reproduced with few changes. Emil: Stories from The Doll's Storybook is now available for preorder from booksellers world wide. Unfinished Business

When I looked at my photos, which is how I usually figure out what I've done during the week, it looked as if I didn't do anything to take photos of. Then I decided to make a list of the things I did this week, and then I took a couple of appropriate photos. Here's my list:

1.) Wrote the holiday letter. (It's too long and needs editing.)
2.) Finally got around to cleaning the Fisher-Price Jenny doll with baking soda and then putting her through the laundry, followed up by a conditioning rinse for her hair. (See photo below.)
3.) I polished up Friday's story, then wrote three more, which will take us through most of December and took all the photos for the Christmas Eve story.
4.) Tidied the workroom and organized the yarn so it would all fit back in the Billy cabinets. Also consolidated the books to get rid of one box and went through most of our daughter's stuff she didn't want, to see if it would be worth donating.
5.) Supervised Rocky's coming and going, and gave him his medications and eye drops. Also too him to the doggie ophthalmologist, who was encouraged by his progress. Continue the drops and take him back in six months if he's still with us.
6.) Took Dusty to get his haircut.
7.) Two trips to the post office to mail books.
8.) Laundry (with Jenny in one load).
9.) Cooked meals, baked bread, etc..
10.) Cleaned one bathroom shower stall.
11.) A few rows of knitting (Jackson's sweater).
12.) Ordered a few Christmas presents.
13.) Choir practice. (We had a lot this week. It's "Lessons and Carols" for the second Sunday in Lent.)
14.) A couple of walks with the dogs.
15.) Sang all that stuff at Church.

So here's Jenny after cleaning:

Here's Jackson's sweater. Almost ready to divide for the sleeves.

This is the "after" photo for the cleaning of the workroom.

Here's a screen shot of our performance. First, our wonderful instrumentalists:

Then the choir. How did we get to be so many? (I think it has to do with our director.)

What's on my needles: Still the Bright Lights sweater for Jackson.

What's on my loom: No progress.

What's on my sewing machine: Its cover. I had hoped to piece the quilt this week, but just couldn't manage it.

What's in my hoop: Still the Whole Cloth Quilt, no progress this week.

What's in The Doll's Storybook: Charlotte and Emil, and The Festival of Lights. Emil got to light the candles all week. He explains the origin story of Hanukkah on the first night and deals with Pippa's unintentional upstaging.

What's on my iPad/iPhone: Listening to State of Terror, a novel, by Louise Perry and Hillary Rodham Clinton on the Audible app. Fascinating so far.

What's in my wine glass: Madroña Vineyars's Lake Tahoe Zinfandel, 2016. It was a bad year for us, in some ways, but a good year for this wine.

What's my tip of the week: Unsalted butter works well to replace shortening..

Pulling Things Together

The T-shirt quilt is coming along. We went out on Saturday for "Shop Small Saturday" and picked up two lovely batiks for the rest of the top. The dark one will be the sashing and border blocks, and the lighter one will be the cornerstones and the border. I hope to get this done this week.

I cast on for Jackson's sweater. I found a little super wash yarn in DK weight in my remnants. It's Knit Picks Swish in Lava Heather. I used it a few years ago for a pullover for DH. I had quite a bit left over and had made a couple of sweaters for Rocky with it and had used it in an outfit for Daphne. The other yarn I'm using in Jackson's sweater is the same multi I used in Parker's.

Speaking of Parker's sweater, here he is in his completed sweater.

As you may know, Thanksgiving was on Thursday. We stayed home to make things easier for Rocky and us. Here's the table. We had a fancy salad, faux and real turkey (behind the water pitcher), gravy, homemade cranberry sauce, bread stuffing/dressing (in the big casserole), asparagus, yams with apple and Lanttulaatikko (Finnish rutabaga casserole), sparkling wine, homemade pumpkin pie and decaffeinated coffee. I set the table so we sat across the width of the table from each other, to make it easier to hand the food around.

We remembered that last year, DBIL was with us for Thanksgiving, no one was vaccinated, and so we had to sit at opposite ends of the table from each other. We have so much to be grateful for this year!

One of those things (Johan) is now binge-reading Harry Potter.

We had our first 10:00 in-person service at Trinity this week. Everyone who could be vaccinated was, and we all wore masks. The seating was set up for people to be distanced by households, and people were asked to drop a slip in the offering basket at the front to say that they had been at the service, in case that information was needed for contact-tracing. If you want to have a look, here's the link. The anthem was at 1:01:16. We had a good-size choir, and I think it went well. This was the first Sunday in Advent.

Johan and his brother got their second Covid shops on Sunday.

The Wisconsin family members were getting ready to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, and everyone else in the family was busy with various things, so we skipped the Zoom meeting for this week.

People have been sending me photos of their children reading Emil: Stories from The Doll's Storybook  or my first book, Mariah. For privacy reasons, I'm not posting them here, but it's really rewarding to me to see them. I just found out that the person who bought my first book in the silent auction for Therapy animals of Utah donated it to Children's Primary Hospital in Salt Lake City, so lots of children will be reading it there. Another writer of a blog that uses dolls as characters gave my new book a cameo appearance in a recent post.

I love seeing my books out in the real world. If you have one, please share a photo with me.

Wishing every one a happy Advent and a happy Hanukkah, and any other holidays you might be celebrating. Don't eat everything in your Advent Calendar the first day!

What's on my loom: Still the trailer rugs. No progress this week.

What's on my sewing machine: Still its cover, but the cover will be coming off this week to finish the top for DH's T-shirt quilt!

What's in my hoop: Still the whole-cloth quilt (sigh).

What's in The Doll's Storybook: In Giving Thanks, three friends spend Thanksgiving weekend visiting each other's places of worship. They decide to make a list of all the things they found were different and were surprised by what the list told them.

What's on my iPad/iPhone: Listening to State of Terror by Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny on the Audible app. Just getting started.

What's in my wine glass: Two Vines Merlot-Cabernet 2015 from the Columbia Valley. Nice.

What's my tip of the week: Don't wait until December to start shopping for Christmas. Hurry up!
